I like the way he has given good long descriptions of the programs, with their features and what is his favourite.

Here's the ones I normally use when looking for the free programs:

I want a Freeware Utility to ... 450+ common problems solved : eConsultant

Open Source Freeware : 400+ free applications and utilities : eConsultant

900ish freebies, albeit with minimal descriptions.

That whole econsultant site looks really good actually, although I've only really used the free software bit.
