Default bandwidth

My brother plays games over the internet practically everyday all day.
Recently my download speed has only been 20 kbps.
It normally would be around 150 kbps. I think that my brother somehow linked our linksys router with another router or computer over the internet, it is causing the problem. Here is the reason I think this.
When you open up Internet explorer and type in 192.168.1.1 it brings up your router settings. Well our router is a linksys router and I've seen netgear and d link settings page up on his computer.

This is what I think.
Can anybody offer some kind of help?

It could be that you are connecting to someone else's wireless router if you are seeing different configuration pages.

If you want to try resetting the settings on your router, press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds.

Also you should try using Firefox, rather than Internet Explorer. Visit Firefox - Rediscover the Web

Thanks ASH, but I don't think that is the problem.

I use network magic to connect to wireless networks and my computer is 5 ft away from the router.
So my signal is excellent.
Also I use Firefox.

Anything else I can do?

You might just want to use Windows' default utility for connecting to wireless networks. Using 3rd party applications can cause problems as well as slowing down your system.

Yes--don't be sure that you're connecting to your router. Generally I've noticed that in windows--regardless of the utility you use--it tries to connect to the "easiest" network to connect to--like one that is not locked and does not use any sort of encryption key, eventhough the signal from another router might be faster. Go to the windows wireless connection utility and look at the name of the connection--that will tell you for sure whether you're connecting to yours or not. Delete any of the routers/wireless networks you do not wish to connect automatically to.

Second, if you're only 5 feet from the router, then I'd suggest plugging in via an ethernet cord and seeing if you still get 150k downloads--likely if you do, then you're connecting to the wrong wireless router.

Last night when everybody's computers were off, I turned mine on and downloaded a file at 166kbps.

It might be that my brother is downloading games all day.

Or it could be that an outsider connected to our router. Even though it has WPA encryption.

Are you absolutely sure you were connected to your router before? And secondly, is your wireless router directly connected to the incoming data line, or is it plugged into some other router or hub or switch? The reason I'm asking is because generally, with my DSL provider, we can get max connection speed per computer if up to 8 computers are connected to the router/gateway--so you should not be experiencing a slowdown just because one other computer is downloading at the same time as yours.

The only way to be sure is to make sure you're only connecting to your wireless router each time you connect--did you do that?

So let us know if your wireless router is connected directly to the incoming data line, or if it's plugged into another router. The reason I ask is because if the wireless router is plugged into anything other than the incoming data line, you'll only get one line worth of bandwidth to the wireless router (it will only be able to allow for a max download of 150k to all of the computers put together)--that could be the cause of the slowdown too. Let us know your network setup.

Well, I think I might know what's going on--or have a better idea anyway. So as far as I know, if you have an ISP that caps download speed to each IP address it assigns (most do), the IP address that is assigned by the ISP will be capped at its' max bandwidth (eventhough there is more bandwidth available on the data line, it's limited to the bandwidth to a single IP address). So from what I understand, your wireless router is getting an IP address assigned by the modem from the ISP (very simply put)--so the entire bandwidth available to the wireless router (divided by all of the computers connected to it) is however much is available to one IP address from the ASDL modem--which is apparently 150k as you mentioned previously. Now perhaps you didn't notice that before because there wasn't heavy traffic on the wireless router, but now with your brother downloading/gaming online, you're noticing it. I'd be willing to bet that's what's going on.

With that taken care of, is the wireless device you're connecting to actually a router, or just a switch or a hub? My question is posed because the solution I would suggest depends on the wiereless device actually being a router--not anything different:

To avoid your problem, it might be best to plug the incoming data line directly into the wireless router--that way the IP addresses that are assigned to each computer are given full bandwidth to each device since each will be given a separate IP address from your ISP--instead of the bandwidth of one connection divided four ways. If it's a regular phone line being plugged into the ASDL modem, there are RJ-11 (phone line) to RJ-45 (ethernet cable) adapters--that way you can plug the adapted ethernet cable directly to the wireless router, which should be just fine and solve the problem.

What channel and were your settings configured? You have to cheat the router to sometimes make it functional with the 4 Computers.
