Default Which ISP?

Please move this to the right forum.. not sure where it fits.

For people here from the UK

Who is your ISP? Any recommendations for me?

I'm currently with plus.net which are OK for the price.. used to be better, before they capped your bandwidth.

I want 8mb unmetered... or HIGH cap.. for less than £20/month. Not many ports blocked. Anybody got any ideas?

If you get ADSL2+ in your area www.bethere.co.uk is the answer. If not I guess Pipex or someone such as that is good enough. If you are a cable user please use your cable company. As ADSL connections dont work on cable.

Yeah, I'm looking for an ADSL company.

Cheers rob, pipex looks excellent value for money.

Purely from a usage point of view.... Ive used the following

AOL - Although they get slated a lot, I used these for 3 years and was only unable to get online twice (once was my own daft fault). The thing with these is to get a router and unput the login details there so that you dont have to install the aol software.

Orange - Who I am currently with. Speeds are ok. Can occasionally have downtime however seems to be getting better all the time. Plus ya get a free voip connection with ya wireless router .. Free calls

Sky - Pain in the ass for knocking you offline. Speeds may be good but untill the service improves I wouldn`t touch them with a bargepoll

Wow, Orange broadband looks pretty sweet! Especially that free calls deal. 8 meg broadband unlimited for £20/month is good anyway, even without that call package.

Orange Broadband FORCES YOU TO USE THEIR ROUTER / MODEM, it is crap and restrictive. It is awful, no portforwarding. Locked to 5 clients etc...

I actually thought their router looked pretty good. Currently we have 2 PCs in the house, if everyone in my family got a laptop we'd still have an open client. And not everybody in my family is likely to get a laptop :p

I'm sure that you can break the contract and flash some other firmware on the Orange router - most routers are in fact low-power computers running Linux. [they are powerful enough for just the Linux command line - you can even ssh into them!]

On the first count you are correct, they do force you to use there router. However crap and restrictive? Cant say I've had any problems. Not sure where you've got the idea that it restricts port forwarding as you can port forward using there router (livebox). Not so sure on the 5 clients as I've not used it for any more than 4, but to be honest, most people aint gonna be running 5 clients on a home network anyways. The majority will only use 2.

fair enough but I just dont like the idea of being restrictive. I have to say I like to be free. This would be no good for my network as I have a server and 9 computers and 2 internal routing devices. As to my understanding only 5 clients can use it. I would recommend someone like Pipex who you honestly pay for a decent service and to purchase a decent router such as a DSL504T from DLINK.
