Default Problem with sending e-mail

Recently I switched to a newer computer with XP pro. My old computer had 98SE. When ever I wanted to send an e-mail on my old comp., all I had to do was left click on the mail bar up above, it would show the outlook express window. Type the persons address in and send what ever I wanted to with no problems.
Now when I try do do what I used to do, another window pops up and asks for my hotmail name, address, and password. When I type this info in, it comes back with (Outlook Express) an unknown error has occurred. Protocol:httpmail, port 0,secure(SSl) no socket error number: 0x80004005
I also belong to a classic car forum. I used to be able to left click on to another persons name, and write them directly. Now after writeing them, and hitting "send" the same out look express window pops up like above. Please help me if you can, Thanks, R.N.

Microsoft have recently stopped Outlook Express access to Hotmail, unless you have a premium account. If you do have one you shouldn't have any problems. You can still use your account via the web at www.hotmail.com.

No, you can no longer access Hotmail through Outlook Express. You can access it via http://www.hotmail.com/, though.

Yes that is correct, unless you pay for Hotmail plus.

There are many other e-mail services, but you will of course need to change your e-mail address. Also most ISPs provide a free e-mail service with your connection.

O.K. Here's what I did just now. I went to Charter.net reopened my old original e-mail account. then I went to Outlook express clicked on tools then accounts them made my charter account my default instead of hotmail. Howeverwhen I went back to trying to send an e-mail as a test. The darn thing came back with my HM name and wanted my PW for the HM acct.. With all that it still wouldn't work or send. I must still have something wrong...

Log On Hotmail
Please enter your usere name and PW for the following server.
Sever ://services.msn./svcs/hotmail/httpmail.
NOW...Instead of in the user name with hotmail it has my charter name and Pw which when hit send it pops right back up asks the same question over again. Sorry to take up so much of your time
