Hi Ian

Ping time refers to the amount of time it takes for a small packet of data to travel over the internet from one computer to another computer and back to the first computer. It is usually reported in milliseconds (ms). So the lower the better.

do i detect a little hostility? why do you care anyways? I have my own internet and its pretty damn good. Im in florida and i happen to not have setup my internet here yet so i happened to automatically connect to someone un-secured network.

It is theft of service if you are not paying for it, that is what he is stating, but not in those words.

Now, it's not illegal to see that there are unsecured networks, but it is to connect to them and use them (even for a speedtest).

I would agree that it is always best to use your own connection, which you did say you have.

i do, but i have to connect with a ethernet b/c i dont have wireless, and its a pain in the ass. Im not obstructing and they dont know that im using their internet. WinWin situation, its thier fault for not having put a password on thier internet. Im almost more than positive that anybody here, if they were somewhere they didnt have internet and they whent on thier laptops and saw a few open networks they would join in a second. What i dont understand is that b/c i said something, everybody likes to start playing the innocent role.

Actually, I probably wouldn't - if I needed internet access somewhere, I would arrange it prior. You don't know what traffic sniffing software that data to/from that router could be going through - it could even be a honeypot router. If you've got an internet connection that's wired - pick up a cheap router and plug it in. Then you won't be sharing all of your passwords and credit card information with everyone.

Honeypot? really i Highly doubt that, this building is filled with the old people that dont do anything, and i dont buy anything on this computer anyways. I have mapped out everything before i used thier internet. I am not as much as a noob as you may think i am, i have proxys and IP hiders for just about everything, so even if they were tracking things and found an IP it wouldnt be mine, everything i use on my computer is mainly Encrypted, i have a lot of things i need to run that could easily get jacked and encryption is the only way to go. Maybe thethings your saying would apply to a novice, but in this case, not me.

I really think that is an unfair statement to make about the older generation, I know of many older generation computer users who are very good computer users so I don't think that statement is necessarily fair. One of the moderators on CF is of the older generation (hope you dont mind me saying ******* (name hidden) and he is very up on computing. Also I don't think anyone was calling you a "NOOB" ASH was just trying to give you good advice.

i didnt say at all he was calling me a noob, and wtf? when did i ever diss anybody who has to do with older generation? i wasnt dissing anybody anyways. you guys are a little touchy... im talking about like 80 year olds dude, not 40 50 year olds. My dad works at a brokerage company and is a computer mainframe and linux(solaris) designer and hes 49. So really i wasnt dissing anybody. I think everybody here needs to just chill thier grills and take some valium. Man this site hates! me! hahahahahaha!! as soon as i say something i get jumped on by like 50 freakin ppl hahahaha
