Your Virgin speed will be fast 'til you download a big file or do Windows updates... then they'll slow you down to half your speed... all part of their "unlimited" service. Sky may not be the best, but Virgin isn't any better, I can assure you.

They're probably not downloading more than 350mb though - which on my 2mbit basic service connection, I can break in around 20-30 minutes. Then the download continues at a snail's pace. You definatley want to keep your phone service on a BT line so that you've got an option to switch to - since they have the cable monopoly in the UK now, they can continue running the company while it's 6bn in debt and introduce cost cutting measures like charging you 25p a minute to have someone in India blame the fault with your service on spyware [even if you're not running Windows].

i'm not sure yet, but other 'good' providers are few and far between, best provider ive ever had is AOL, never any problems. The Sky call center is in Scotland, rather go through to India tbh (joke, no offence any Scottish but people in India are easier to understand!). What company you going with Ash?

It's a pretty cheap-and-cheerful looking company who resell BT Wholesale bandwidth. Their download limits are clearly stated and fair, and for an all-in package [phone calls, line rental and broadband] it's around £26 a month. Every time I phoned the 0800 number I was on hold for no longer than 3 mins and put through to a fairly cheerful person in the UK, and they are open for sales and line faults 24x7. For cheap phone rates and huge savings on telephone calls use Direct Save Telecom. I'll let you know how I get on once the BT line has been put in / reconnected [it has been un-used for at least 10 years, I do not remember when we first got cable but it was a rather long time ago]
