Default Is the Internet a good thing?

There's been a lot of debate on whether the Internet, in general is a good or bad thing. Whilst it has brung instant communication and vast amounts of information, it has also been used as a tool for fraudsters to scam people in handing over credit card details, and paedophiles to lure children.

So do you think the Internet is a good or bad thing? State why you voted the way you did below.

Default RE: Is the Internet a good thing?

For me it's GOOD.

I can earn some money by working on sites (for me and the clients). I was able to gain a lot of knowledge I wouldn't have access to otherwise. I can relax, play a game, read something, know nice people. It's good .

Default RE: Is the Internet a good thing?

The good definately outweighs the bad. I agree it has brought a lot of bad with it. A lot of that was going on before the internet. Just not in the quantity now. And most people probably were not even aware of it happening right in their own neighborhood. I think it has expanded our knowledge of local and world affairs tremedously. It's kinda like the shopper motto of buyer beware. Depending on your knowledge of the toys will effect your play.

Default RE: Is the Internet a good thing?

THIS FORUM IN NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM REPRESENTS AOL...

yeah whatever, the internet is great, pedophiles, pron, but didn't that all begin before the internet. lets just say the internet is a really good bit of technology used to bring pedophiles and pron together. wonderful... but yeah the wealth of information, the internet is definatly a good thing. The pros outweigh the cons.

I have learned a lot from the internet. I can buy things on the internet that i can't find in stores. I know if things are in stock. I im a lot, so i love the internet in that respect. Email is another important thing. I love playing online games, and I love online multiplayer(bf2142).

Internet is a good thing, but it does have a dark side...
There are viruses, hackers, etc. that can really mess up your PC. But it's mostly good:
One thing is email, without it we wouldn't be on here... not that I ever even check my emails cause I never get any :p

Also, servers are pretty important. We need them to share files, set up emails, and start up a website.

I think the Internet is a wonderful tool that the world needs , although it does have a bad side to it. There has always been good and evil through out time and it will continue with or without the Internet but as long as people like us combat the evil and continue to do good by helping and receiving help the Internet will survive.

Default It's great

It's great. It allows for the very rapid searching and assimilation of information--and allows people to get useful computer help from forums like this. By far a good thing. Like every facet of society, it has it's pitfalls, but I would say it's a good thing, and really couldn't imagine my life being as convenient without it. Also it enables people to keep in touch when otherwise they might not--I know I'm one of those people--don't really feel the need to call people on the phone, so I just stop talking to them. But email is totally different...

There are things on the internet that are good and things that are bad but as for the internet itself, I think it is a pretty weak vessel to be holding the things that we have become dependent upon. I don't care what device you are using to access it, the truth is that it is totally dependent on energy (power, electricity). If I don't have a power source I don't have the internet - simple as that! Much as I love all the good things about the net I am scared that as we replace offline ways of obtaining/storing/retrieving information with the online ones, that are available on the net, we are becoming totally dependent on a medium that could disappear at the flick of a switch or the blowout of a fuse or whatever. The answer? I don't know... Maybe internet access that is not energy dependent or development of alternative energy sources that can be utilised by computers? Does anyone know if either of these are being looked at?
