Default Computer hiccups during gaming ??

Just installed Neverwinter nights 2 and played for about a half hour and my computer started to stall and skip during fast graphics.... The recommended specs for the game are:

Recommended:
3 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
1 GB System RAM
ATI X800 series, NVIDIA GeForce 6800 series, 256 MB, or higher, video card

and I'm running:

Core 2 duo 2.2
2g ram
Radeon 2400PRO HD

Anyone have ideas on why its having trouble? I set the game on the absolute lowest graphics and it ran fine, but at medium it has some hiccups and on high it pretty much stalls out...

Not enough processor to run it. Specs on game are recommended min. Otherwise, you've got plenty of RAM and video memory.

Its recommended is a pen 4 3.0...doesn't a dual core 2.2 blow that out of the water??

Thanks. Just looked it up and no, the game doesn't... Thats kind of aggravating when I pay extra for dual core yet programs are still not using them. And worse its actually hurting the performance...

Dual core and quad core are for multitasking. A game is only one task.

Yes but must newer games use both cores. The reason for dual cores if that they hit a road block on how many gigs they could have in a cpu becasue of the heat it produced so the dual core was made.

i believe multi core processors are being used in consumer computers because its cheaper (and better for multitasking of course) to have more cores as opposed to more transistors. cheaper to have 2 cores instead of twice the amount of transistors.

I just had a little look aout this game, and I came across this from TweakGuides.com :

Quote:
Neverwinter Nights 2's engine is not optimized ('multithreaded') for dual core CPUs. As such the game only uses the equivalent of one CPU at any time, and can't be forced to fully utilize both for better performance. Worse still, the developers have stated that the game may experience issues or reduced performance on dual core CPUs (See the game's Readme.rtf file). To prevent this, I firstly recommend that all AMD dual core CPU users install the AMD Dual Core Optimizer Utility which fixes a potential timing conflict in some games. For both AMD and Intel users who still feel like their dual core CPU could be the cause of problems in NWN2, you can run the game in single core mode by changing its affinity. Note that the game's Toolset can utilize dual cores efficiently, just not the main game engine itself.

I have no idea if that is of any help to you or not...?

No one program will be using more than one core soon. Read Software is Wasting Your Cores | PC Pitstop
