Default my power supply problem. please help

hello. recently my computer's power supply died on me, so i ordered a thermaltake 430W power supply as a replacement. I got it today and I plugged in my hard drives and dvd drives, then the 20 pin connector, then i tried the 4 pin connector and the pattern on the new one doesn't match the female input on the motherboard. Do I need to get another power supply?

if it helps my computer is a compaq presario with a 2.13 GHz amd processor. 996mb(i believe, should be close to 1 gig) of ram, 1 80 gig hard drive, 1 180gig hard drive. then two dvd burners.

thanks in advance!

is the P2 in question a 6-pin instead of a 4-pin? Read your manual, it should state how to handle this, as the 4-pin is just part of the 6-pin (some may overhang the socket), or the extra pins may disconnect from the main 4. The pins are keyed to only fit one way, which should prevent your plugging it in wrong.

But... remember, you can make something Foolproof, but not DARN-foolproof.

When in doubt experiment........... The four pin plug usually goes into the mobo near the processor unless some idiot tech issued a TD (technical directive) giving instructions on where it goes. Usually newer boards only have a 24 pin connection, and run of the mill production board use the path of least cost analysis (POLCA).
