Default ASUS Eee900 Review

While the new screen is beautiful, I cant help feeling that simply slotting it into the existing 701 would have been a preffered option. The extra componenets in this hardware revision are welcome, but the big problem is the power draw they now present. While the 701 has a battery life of around four hours, the 900 can only give around two and a half. When your taking the Eee on the move, this shorter working life is going to make you think twice before using the 900

Pricing itself against the likes of Dell also presents a problem; namely that all your getting with the 900 over the Inspiron is a smaller, slower machine. Asus's decision to push this revision out before the launch of Intels Atom (a new low power mobile CPU) also makes the 900 tough to recommend as the arrival of an Atom-Powered Eee sometime around June is almost inevitable.

Having said all of this. I have one of these myself, and its more than capable of being used by consumers not demanding high battery life or super powered portable computers.

The EeePC is available in Black and White and Also Linux and Windows.

So the 900 is Celeron and the new 901 has this Atom processor? I read that the 901 battery is clocking in at 7.5 hours. Do either of them have a DVD/CD drive? I seem to remember someone telling me they don't so how do you install software? External optical drive or what?

//This message is coming from my eee.

You don't get a CD drive, but you can install any Linux Distro or XP using a memory stick or an external drive.
I used a SD card to install XP on here, and you can install software by either copying it to a memory stick or just downloading it from the web.

The Atom is slower, it'll be more expensive and I doubt the battery estimates will be as high as stated - Asus might pull the trick they played on eee 900 Users and include a low capacity battery.

ATOM? :S

And you really don't need a CD/DVD ROM. I don't miss it at all on my eee.

Actually you are right Jam - I could easily live without a CD/DVD ROM. I just get attached to my bits and pieces and don't like giving anything up! Ahhh... remember when we had a slot for a 3 1/2 inch floppy?

i saw one of these eee pc's at harvey norman the other day but i didn't recognise the OS. didn't seem to do much either. it came with pre-set applications and it didn't seem very appealing. If you were able to install ubuntu as stated in above posts it would be much cooler

The preinstalled OS is quite limited. There's a simple way to get a full KDE desktop on there, but still the Xandros has various limitations. It's very easy to load XP or Ubuntu, either via a USB CD Drive or a memory card. I installed XP on my eee with just a flash memory card.
