| Hi all, I need some serious help and fast. I am trying to work on a scrapbook that needs done quickly for a present and my computer wont cooperate. I have a Dell XPS 720, Dual 500 GB hard drive, still have 85% space left on the system. All of the sudden, while trying to edit photo’s in VARIOUS programs, they either crash, I get constant error messages stating not enough memory, I can no longer SCAN photo’s into the computer because it wont save them and get the same memory error message. I contacted tech support 3 times to no avail. They have gone into the section where you change the memory to enter custom numbers, they have selected “let system manage”, they had me uninstall and reinstall my photo programs and none of this has helped. What can I do short of doing a total system uninstall and reinstall because I don’t have time for that given I only have a couple days to finish this project for a gift. Why would I get all these memory error messages in the first place with such a hardy computer? Brand new at that. Like I said I have plenty of space, I defragmenter my hard drive, uninstalled and reinstalled programs, took any trial photo software off, ran virus check, ran spam checks, etc...and anything Dell did didn’t stop the memory problems. Please advise. I am not a techie so the simplest of explanations would be appreciated. Thanks. |

| Hello beth313, Firstly - welcome to CompuForums. It's good to have you here and we hope you enjoy our community. Here we can help you for free, but in return you must help us also. You can do this by either by helping other people before you request help for yourself, or posting in The Lounge. If neither of these appeal to you, then consider becoming a Premium Member. These simple things do not take much of your time, considering we spend a lot of time helping people like you for free, and due to this being abused we now ask for a little of your own time. If you cannot do either of these, then we will not be able to fix your computer problems. Please provide some more information: -How much RAM does your computer actually have? -Is it still under warranty? -What antivirus and antispyware software are you running? -How big are the photo files that you are trying to edit? -What operating system does your computer run?

| Hi, I certainly will do my best to help on the forum as you suggested, but I am not a computer wiz so I don't know how much help I can give. I don't even know how to properly answer your questions but I'll try. 1.) 3.00 GB RAM (I think) 2.) Yes, still warranty...computer is only 3 months old... 3.) running PC-illin antivirus (or something like) along with SPYWARE Doc. 4.) Photo's are scanned in at 1200 res. Huge, I know, but I want them that way. But Dell tech said it wasn't all that big. When I scroll the mouse over the actual picture it says it's 17 MB 5.) Windows Media XP Also, I have 1 TB hard drive with 85% free space. I defraged the hard drive which helped for a day it seemed. It says I have 770519 MB of space available in my memory section. Under total paging file it states my min. allowed is 2 MB....4603 MB recommended...currently allocated 3069 MB. BUT, when tech support manually changed it to custom size instead of system managed, it didn't fix anything. Hope you can help me for I need to get a project with a bunch of photo's done in a hurry. Thanks again, Beth |

| 17Mb Wow thats a very big file for an image. Do you really need them to be like this? |

| I just scanned a picture 6½ by 7½ at a res of 1200 and it was 203 plus megs big. I got a warning message from my photo program about possible failure but it still did it with no problem.

| Im not suprised considering your system specs. |

| Perhaps it programs running in the background. I would turn them all off including PC-illin which I think is a resource hog.

| yeah i think i shared a similar problem on my g/fs family pc...they had so much backround programs running it ate through their RAM so quick you were unable to run much for very long Im not sure if mine is the exact same problem but i used CTRL + ALT +del and the computer i was on was running after start up (they had HEAPs of programs on startup) and check how much physical memory you have left a) after oyu start up b) after you open you picture editing program |

| Hi Beth - what file type are you scanning your pics in as? Do you really need your res so high? I have pics 10.6" x 14.2" in .jpg format at 72 dpi which look great when printed and they are only 300kb. If you are wanting them printed by commercial printers then your dpi needs to be around 300 but even at that size they should not be 17MB or more. Check your scanner software and see if you can scan them as .jpg or reduce the dpi. Also, as mel8again suggests - turn off anything in your system tray that you don't need for your session as things ticking away in the background can chew through memory too.
