Default building my new rig

I have been trying to put my new rig together and I started working on the wiring. This is pretty confusing. I have no idea what goes where. I have a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L motherboard. Is it possible to hook something up wrong? Could someone help me out?

It is VERY possible to hook something up wrong. First thing to know is to not plug any power plugs into the motherboard until the last step. Just keeps the mobo from shorting. What specifically are you having trouble with?

You should have received a manual for your motherboard, showing all wiring connections.
If not you can download one from: GIGABYTE - Product - Motherboard - Overview - GA-P35-DS3L (rev. 1.0) and get additional support there if needed.
Just follow the diagram carefully, take care to line up the motherboard standoffs (little brass screws) where they line up with the screw holes on the motherboard.

I could not find anything showing the wiring connections. I just can't figure out where anything goes. I didn't realize it would be this confusing.

Did you download the manual as I asked?
Page 21-27 of this manual clearly shows all internal connections, the leads coming from your case should also be labelled to allow you to match up connections.
If you are unable to follow these diagrams, then you should get someone to do it for you.

I seen that but doesn't that just show which pin is which on the motherboard and not the actual wires? Or am I wrong? Wouldn't that be in the case manual?

You would be lucky to get a manual with the case, if so they sometimes show which wires are which, but not all.
The connectors on the end of the wires are marked ie: spk (speaker) pwr (power) led (self explanotory) gnd (ground) nc (no connection) and so on

I figured that out but how do I know which way they go on the motherboard? I assume it matters but I don't know.

Switch connection will work either way around, hdd & power led's will only work the correct way around, power in led's only flows only in one direction and no harm can be done if wrong way around, they just won't work until corrected.
Usb connectors are usually in a single block with one pin blocked preventing incorrect connection, if you are unfortunate enough to have individual connectors then you need to check each lead with the diagram.
Speaker connections; match up the leads with corresponding pins on the speaker block on the mobo.

On the case there are 2 usb connections on the top and there are 2 wires. Do both of these wires hook up on the same block on the motherboard?

I would still like to know if the white wires are the ground.

Usually white is ground, but check you documentation. For instance on mine all are white except the firewire port, where white is positive.
If you have 2 front usb with 2 sets of leads, both need to be connected to the mobo.

The motherboard doesn't say anything about the wires. It just tells me about the connections on the motherboard.

My question on the usb wires is I have 2 usb ports on the case. There are 2 wires for them. Do they need to be plugged into the same block or different ones?

Also on the fans how do I know which one plugs into the motherboard where? There are 3 different places for fans on the motherboard, sys_fan1, sys_fan2, and pwr_fan. There are only 2 fans that plug into the motherboard and both say power.

Forgive me for I am just a noob at this.

Page 7 of your manual shows 4 sets of front usb connectors F_USB1,2,3,4.
Connect one to F_USB1 and the other to F_USB2.
How many fans in the case? usually at least one at rear and one on the side of the case on the new cases, plug these in fan1 & fan2, if you have or add a front fan use the pwr_fan.
The wires are not part of the mobo and subject case makers decisions on how they are labelled. They do tend to vary to some lesser or greater degree.
The better case makers tend to supply wiring diagrams to help with instalation, others leave it for you to work it out.
These days at least the usb and firewire connectors are standard and only need plugging in.
So as mentioned before any that have to be connected individually, you need to check what is written on the connector on the end of the lead, and match it with the mobo connectors.

I am only showing 3 sets of front usb connectors, f_usb1, f_usb2, f_usb3. Doesn't each one support 2 usb ports? If so, wouldn't I plug in both of the wires on to the same one? Will it harm anything if plugged in wrong?

There are 4 fans in my case. There are 2 in the rear, 1 on top and 1 in the front. Only 2 of them has connections for the motherboard, 1 in the rear and 1 in the front.

Thanks for your help, JohnM. I really appreciate it.

What is firewire? I have bunch of single pins that is bundled together that is labeled IEEE 1394. Where do they plug in on the motherboard?

1394 , if supported on the motherboard ,( i forget) will be somewhere close to the USB , if you don't know what it is , and don't use it , you don't have to plug it in ... it wont hurt anything
