I had a power supply die recently and my computer would not boot at all - However the power light was flashing which meant something to Dell - The other issue that was explored was the motherboard possibly being fried - As it turned out it was just the power supply with mine. Have there been any storms lately in your area?

quick question about how to take the power supply out of the case. All the psu's ive seen have been where you disconnect the cables from the power supply itself but the one installed in my comp has all the wires going into a big hole in the psu enclosure. so im wondering if i just unplug the psu from all the different components?

im also thinking of doing some aditional upgrades to this machine so i was just wondering a few things. 1. If i buy a new motherboard will i have to change any other components? 2. If i add a second hardrive will i need a more powerful power supply? 3. WIll buying a power supply with more power than i need mess-up my computer?

1) Probably only the RAM and the CPU [your RAM may be slower than what it could be and if the new motherboard has a different socket type you'll need another CPU] 2) It would depend on the wattage of the power supply - maybe you could find that out for us. But generally hard drives don't use -too- much power. 3) Your computer can never have enough power. The power supply only draws the amount of power it needs. For example, if your power supply is rated @ 600 watts but the computer's components are only drawing 250 watts, then the extra wattage that the power supply could supply in theory simply isn't drawn from the mains.
