Default Computer Dilemma need guidance.

ok, here is the issue.

I have a Mac pro in one of the rooms in my house.

I keep the mac pro there because i use it for work and i work in that room.

I have my bed room about 30 feet away.

I want to use my mac pro in my bedroom and ALSO use it in that other room.

I thought about lugging it back and forth but in the long run that just wont cut it.

So I thought up this idea... Let me know if this is even possible.

I was thinking, if i just keep a monitor, mouse and keyboard... and speakers in my bedroom, would i be able to run a 50 foot DVI or VGA cable to my bedroom from the work room?

Second question, Would I be able to link up mulitiple USB cables to get it long enough to place a mouse/keyboard wireless reciever somewhere in the bedroom?

And the third question, im very sure is possible is to run speaker wire from the work room to the bedroom.

Do you think it would lag at all? considering the length of the VGA cable and USB cable?

I'm wondering how i would be able to leave both vga cables connected while being able to switch between what monitor i would like to use... hmmm.

Ooorr, another alternative may be to run a long linked up USB cable from the work room to the bedroom connecting to a docking station. Then I'd be able to hook all my wires up locally.

What to do, what to do..

What do you guys think?

Hi Anchalata,
Firstly, I'd like to welcome to CompuForums - it's good to have you here. I hope you will be on the board for a long time, and if there is anything I can do to make your experience better please let me know. We are here to help you, so it would be appreciated if you could help us by posting in threads as well as your own. By doing so, you are helping to keep this site running in the future, and we will respond to your thread faster too. If you can't help us, then we can't help you.

I would suggest a remote desktop / VNC based system. Do you have another computer that can be networked?

there are functional limits to digital video (or any video) cable lengths. To run those unsightly wires, you will at some point (or some points) need a video repeater box
Same goes for any cable you run. True LAN cables can normally run a lot further, but most that carry some intensive signals suffer gain losses, noise interference and other nasty little annoyances. USB will require a few hubs.

Overall, I see this as an UGLY little mess that the significant other won't allow!!!.
Why not get a cheap *ROFL* Mac laptop that you can use wirelessly, set up a wireless network, and use it from EITHER the bedroom or the office?
Does Apple offer a Docking station for their laptops? If yes, use it in the office, and an extra power supply hooked up behind the bed for when you are in the bedroom.

Of course, I view computers in the bedroom as I view TV's... detractors from what should go on there.. sleep. oh yes and those marital duties......................like cleaning, getting your underwear off the floor, making the bed...

Thanks for the welcome, this forum seems very knowledgeable.

Yea I figured i'd need some repeaters, but then I saw 50 foot VGA cables.. I don't see how they'd make that long of a cable if you needed a repeater every 15 feet. Remember I'm only trying to run it about 40 feet.

And yes Ash my whole house is networked wirelessly but the problem with remote desktop is its really not the actual computer. I'd rather just run a little P4 box than Remote Desktop. I'm aiming for Native speed, like the computer is by my side lol.

I was planning on running the cables through the attic. I can see your point on getting another little laptop or something but then again its not the mac pro lol and again its not the same computer.

I don't mind buying 2 or 3 usb hubs to keep the connection alive lol.

Maybe I should stop dreaming lol.

Thanks for the input
