Exclamation Upgrading a Dell 5150

Im looking for an affordable solution to a new computer instead of building a new one. This is the computer I have now.

Compare Prices and Read Reviews on Dell Dimension¿ 5150 (DIM515MIN) PC Desktop at Epinions.com

Difference is my 5150 has an ATI X600,160gb hard drive and 1gb of ram.

I was wondering if I could put these components inside my dell.

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Processor - 2.40GHz, 8MB Cache, 1066MHz FSB, Kentsfield, Quad-Core, OEM, Socket 775, HH80562PH0568M, Processor in Canada at TigerDirect.ca

EVGA GeForce 8800 GTS Superclocked Video Card - FREE Enemy Territory: Quake Wars PC Game, 640MB GDDR3, PCI Express,SLI Ready, Dual DVI, HDTV, Video Card 640-P2-N825-AR in Canada at TigerDirect.ca

Ultra X-Finity 500-Watt ATX 120mm Fan SATA-Ready SLI-Ready Black Power Supply ULT31845 in Canada at TigerDirect.ca

I don't think a 8800GTX will fit in a Dell 5150. Would upgrading my system to this Quadcore and 8800GTS work? Or would I also have to buy a new motherboard?

The power supply shouldn't be an issue. You however cannot install that cpu as the motherboard in that system doesn't support the bus speed of it. Also the video card shouldn't be an issue either.

Well a 8800 is a large Card so id check the dimensions of components around your PCI-E slot and see if the case is long enough.

Also that PSU with that Vcard is pushing it to me... id get atleast a 600Watt, and as the preveous poster said... that motherboard will not support that Cpu's Front Side Bus ( FSB)

So all I would have to buy is a new motherboard and powersupply? I never opened my PC before and I don't have time to do that tonight. Is there any way I would be able to find out without measuring the dimensions? Such as a website on it, Im having no luck finding one.

I don't think the card will fit, this is what I found on this site.

PC World - XFX GeForce 8800GTX User Reviews

A guy on this site who replied to a GFX card review said he could not fit it inside his Dell Dimension 5150.

Im on a tight budget as I still want enough money to purchase games, Is it possible that I could switch all the components from my dell to a new computer case? I probably won't be doing it and I have a friend who is a computer technician so it won't be a problem putting the components inside.

if you get a new motherboard you will need a new case as well... because a dell case is not compatible with a non dell mobo.

now your looking into alot more money so youd be better off just building a completly new system

Yes I know that, Im wondering if I would beable to put the components in my dell computer (HD,Soundcard etc...) into the new computer case so I can save money. I will be buying the case (which comes with powersupply) Motherboard,GFX card and Processor. Will that work?

Yes but your copy of windows will kill itself, because such a huge hardware change at one time it will think it has been copied and invalidtae itself so beforehand , backup your data and be preapred to re install windows ( assuming you have a resotreCD) and if you dont look to spend about 150 on xp pro

ive just registered on the forum after reading the original posters post

infact i have the del 5150 dimension myself and upgraded my psu to 450watt tiny ...i was lookin to upgrade my gfx card soon after and finally got the 8800gts 640mb xfx xxx edition .. i had enough to buy a 8800gtx but found out it was too big and needed 2 connectors anyway for power

after cutting away the fan plastic cover and bending and twisting the outside wire frame ..finally got it in and fitted but it was extremly tight ..turned it on and got the 2 and 4 lights ( diagnostic lights meaning theres a problem with the gfx card) i sent iot to a pc shop i regularly visit and gave it to them to sort out ..at the moment im currently figuring to get a new motherboard fitted and maybe processor and if it works it works ill pay under 70-80 quid or else i might aswell get a new machine

if it doesnt work after a new mobo etc ..im gonna try and get the 9200 dimension .. i wish i hadnt have bought the 5150 in the first place..budget came into mind when buying a new machine at the time but if your a gfx card enthusiast ..a big case is a must

ill postup any devolpments on my machine

Also I wouldn't go inside a computer unless you know what you are doing or you can afford to mess it up.

story behind the warrenty thing is ..i bought the 5150 feb last yer...the motherboard went dead in april/june this yer ...just over the year warrenty..it was either repairing or buying a new machine ..i repaired it only soley bcoz i wanted the data from the hard drives in the machine .. 120 pounds for a replacement motherboard..i also got a new psu for the gfx i was intending to put in later on ..that was 50 pounds ..i put a 400gb hard drive...75 pounds that was .. now after the 8800gts dilemea you can understand how gutted im feeling rite now ..

dell always ring me up asking me wether i want to extend warrently for my notebook..i didnt take any notice thinkin it is a waste of money..but really you just cant trust computers at all ..they are extremly fragile

I have been lucky I have had my computer for about 5 years now, but I custom built it myself so that is probably the biggest difference.

fascinating thing is ..year 2000 i bought a packard bell ...specs 600mhz p3 cost was 1100 pounds...nothing to rave about now about the specs...but the machine is still to this day working....only problem i had with it was the hard drive failed few year ago..but it was a 20gb anyway ..the motherboard etc works like a treat touch wood

i payed 325 wuid for the 5150 over year ago bcoz of a tight budget...i really mite look into building a quality machine rather than getting a dell ...

I pretty sure that is the same model that I use at work and I like it a lot, except for the fact that it definitely doesn't have those specs.
