Default Computer Keeps Freezing (even in Bios)

Hey, I have a HP Pavillion 9000Z

AMD Turion 64x2 TL-60 1.6ghz @ 2ghz DDR

Yes, it's a POS, you don't need to remind me.

Anyways, it's running windows XP Media center edition (biggest waste of $)

So it keeps freezing up, but I've never seen anything freeze up in such a weird way before. If i'm watching a movie or something - it will continue playing, but then if I go to do anything, nothing will work, the mouse will move, but nothing will work. Weirdest crap ever.

Now this also happened IN THE BIOS, so I think it's safe to eliminate all software from this equation as though I'm no computer expert, I do believe the bios is located on the board and not the hard-disk.

So it keeps locking up, now in my minute experience there's two things that cause constant lockups - that would be a loose ram chip, and overheating, now more than once I flipped the damn thing over to spray it out with compressed air and caught the CPU fan stopped (now as far as I know, that should never be stopped). I went to check the temperature in the Bios (I got this phoenix bios - it's a complete joke, hard as hell to move around in, can't find temp readings anyways, it's a pain in the neck - the other mainstream bios is better (advance? i forgot the name)) and it locked up IN the Bios.

So i'm pretty confident it's because of the CPU fan, so I came on here and downloaded speed-fan. Now according to the screen shots, there's supposed to be fan information and there simply isn't.

I'm not sure what the blue "down" arrow means, but both my hard disks are green check, and both my cores and "temp1" are roasting (has the lil orange flame next to them) with the primary running at 59ºC and the other running at 55ºC).

To help deal with the problem I have the computer jacked up and a fan blowing hardcore onto it to help disappate heat - it's been aiding, but not preventing.

I don't know much about laptops - do the fans just "go" like this? It was supposedly under warranty, but when I called them up I got shafted big-time - they wanted $600 just to check it out - diagnosis and stuff.

Can somebody enlighten me here - desktops are one thing, I'm completely new to laptops - it's 1 year old, is the CPU fan the only fan in it? Either way - does it work the same way as a regular CPU fan on a desktop (just unclips and drop a new one in) or do I have to pull the CPU/heat sink and put new paste on it and such?

And uhh, WHERE can I get this stupid fan? I don't think it's working, 80% of the time it's not spinning, and as far as I can tell I'm cooking the processor with this bullshit.

Somebody help, I need a direction to go here. I'm hoping it's just the fan and that once it's replaced it'll work right, but right now one of the cores is at 64ºC and I know it's horrible to continuously run it like this so I'm gonna shut it down while I nap. This is my main computer and I can't afford downtime - Obviously I'm limiting use to keep the processors from clocking high - but I'm kinda jammed up in the mean time. Any info on the situation is appreciated.

Thx

have you gotten any fan fail warnings?

Have you tried to Reseat the RAM? This is one check. Laptop fans run only when needed, this saves battery life. But i've seen notebooks freeze, or not start even to bios because the RAM either Creped out, or was bad. To boot, the error messages when the ram had problems would be different ever time. (this is due in part because the error message references a memory address, which would change most of the time when the ram was going bad.)

My suggestion would be to reseat the ram First (pull it out and put it back in firmly), second to call HP and demand proper service, if it's under warranty, they should fix it. Dont hesitate to ask for supervisors and managers. As for the fans, let it run normally, pay attention to if/when they come on (once the machine starts). Also, once you get it to start, and go into bios, check the logs. If it had a thermal-shutdown, it would state as much.

I'll try reseating the ram today. As for the HP thing their deal was technically it was out of warranty by like 3 days and it was my fault for not "renewing it" so whatever, it is what it is.

The computer starts up fine, but the Bios is a mess - I've never dealt with one of these phoenix bios's (and from my brief use with them, I hate them) and I can't figure out where the temperature readings are and I would have no idea where to begin to look where to logs are stored.

I've seen RAM not all the way in cause freezing too, so I'll try that, but my processor is still "too hot" according to speedfan. It's a relief to hear that it's supposed to be turning on and off (the CPU fan) though, but speedfan isn't reading the fan...which kinda bothers me.

@ Southpark:

I'm not really computer savvy, u gotta realize this. I have no idea if it's overclocked or not - I doubt it is unless it comes overclocked from HP. Though no, I've gotten no fail warnings.

----------------------------------------------------

That was my other question, is there a place where there'd be a data storage log for these things (crashes/freezes)?

I will try reseating the ram, but I'm almost certain the cores are running way too hot, what should the temperature be? Both at the cores and wherver "temp1" is?

since we ruled out hardware settings lets try this

Download and Run HijackThis
Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.
  • Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.
Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Did everything to the letter (not exactly a complicated process..but whatever, hope it helps in the diagnosis...)

Anyways, hope somebody could figure something out, here's the hijack this log:

well nothing in the log would be causing you problems like what you are having with this overheating.

if you ask me... id just take it to your local pc repair shop and see what they would charge

Try setting the BIOS to default and see if that solves your problem.

Yes, actually. Flash your bios. Its real easy, Just go to the manufacturers web site, and find your laptop model. There should be a download link for the bios. Follow the instructions.

Are you able to get into the OS for a few minutes before it freezes? If yes, most bios updates can be run from within windows. (let's hope it lasts long enough for it to reboot to the new bios). If no, they usually have instructions on how to use a floppy to update the bios. All you need to be able to do is follow directions.

The sign of a good mechanic (or computer technician) is the ability to diagnose a problem. Almost everyone can turn some screws and replace a part. Proof of concept, can you add gas to your car?

Well, then if you can follow directions, you can flash your bios. If you come across some instructions you have questions about, please stop by for an explanation. Be sure to include the URL of the page with your instructions.

@Ultra_Man

I already went back to the BIOS and set all the settings to default >> "save and exit." No go.

@ Thaylok

The freezes are like once a day or once every 2 days - so yeah it'll last long enough to do that.

I'll check out HP's website.

It was hardbooted and all it froze ~5 minutes ago.

Now that it's done with its fit it won't freeze for another day or so - but what bothers me is the temp and fan...

I'm running speedfan here and the cores are always running pretty high - but it's NOT dependent on load...example, right now they're running at 45/48 - which isn't bad from what I hear. Though I can come back, where my computer's been idling, and look at it, and they'll be closer to 60. Then I can clock the crap outta the GPU playing a game for a half hour - look at it - and it won't have affected the processors' temp at all - it could be at 42 - it could be at 62.

What bothers me more than how hot it's running is the fact that speedfan (nor any other utility) can't READ the fans - it just comes up empty on the fan data, RPM and such. I reckon that has something to do with the problem as well. Usually both cores run around 53 or so, or one will read 58 or 62 and the other will read 53 :-\.

Blah .

Tanks for everybody's help so far - of course, any additional information would be greatly appreciated.

PS: Right now the laptop's jacked up at a 30º angle with a big fan blowing directly on the processor's vent on an angle to help disapate heat. I need this computer for school therefore I can't have the temp raping the processor. Is it possible my fan is messed up and that's why it's not getting read - and maybe it's not working like it's supposed to?

If I can get one of my techee friends to help me I'm thinking about just taking apart the case - re-seating the heat-sink with new paste (who knows, maybe the paste got too hot and cracked) and checking the fan.

If anybody has any other info I'd greatly appreciate it.

Meanwhile my dad just installed OS X leopard and it's running 100%, gah...unfair

Well consider this. With your bios updated, and the freezing still occurs, you can guaranty it is hardware (cpu). I stay this, because you stated that it was freezing even in bios. By updating the bios (and re-seating the ram) You have ruled out a problem with the BIOS itself. You also may very well have added some features. This includes a log that may give more information. Don't be afraid to poke around to find it.

If you overheated your processor, as far as I know, it is time for a new processor. But then, I've not really run into it(overheating processor) more than once, and then, it turned out to be a defective processor, that was returned the same day for replacement. But others may know more. Maybe you can get some software from the MoBo manufacturer which can help better regulate the temp and fans from inside the OS.

Other than that, I'm not too sure. I've sat and watched quite a few latitudes have new mobo's and processors replaced (We have the certified tech come in and do the warranty work for us), and I feel can do them easily enough (on that model for sure). If you aren't familiar with taking laptops apart, I don't recommend you doing it yourself.

Of what, my fan?

It's not giving me a reading on my fans (and yes, I do think that's related to the fact that you can boil an egg on my processors) .

@Thaylock:
Well it only froze once in bios, I can't be sure it was the same thing, but then again, I spend a lot more time in windows than I do in the bios...naturally.

When I get around to it I plan on re-seating the ram, and re-seating (and re-pasting) the heat sink. It's possible it got jarred loose or that it got too hot once and cracked the paste - I don't know. I've done it plenty of times on a desktop but never on a laptop - I'm going to wait for one of my friends to be free (it's hard as it's approaching finals week in 2 weeks) and we can take it apart and re-seat the ram and heat-sink.

So far it's been good...hasn't froze in a good 36 hours or so and according to speedfan my temperatures are "in check" (around 41) - but one core's starting to jump to 48 since i woke up - it'll freeze today, I'm sure.

Also, I have it banked on a ~30º angle with a relatively big fan blowing accross the processor - I reckon that's decipating some of the heat although the results might be small.
