Don't I feel sheepish.

So you'd give your stamp of approval on on g-skill and sapphire? I've had a few modules burn out on me before when I went with unfamiliar brands.

All of this raises the question: why the price differences, besides the name slapped on the side?

I'm browsing newegg and there is a huge price range going on for PC2 6400. I read an article recently that the #-#-#-# (latency I think) on the modules factors less into performance than most people believe....so, what am I getting for $65 as opposed to $80 (or $100 ).

I didn't realize the $40 off the orig. $105 tag. I'm just wondering what's the difference between the one you listed, and something like:

Newegg.com - CORSAIR Dominator 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail

or, more reasonable:

Newegg.com - CORSAIR Dominator 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail

What's the extra money giving me? Btw, thanks for investing so much time in my post...it's really appreciated.

Nah, certainly don't want to drop $350 on memory. Just wondering what waranted the pricetag, that's all.

I just realized I"m going to need a better power supply. I think mines a Spire 450W.

I've only had one PSU die on me, and it was really old. I've mostly gone with Thermaltake due to lack of knowledge of other components. But, once again, value and reliability (though inversely related sometimes) are paramount. So, in short , I could use some recommendations.

On a side note, I'm not overclocking anything. My case has good ventilation, but I've never dared to touch my settings. The reviews for the card say it's really 'overclockable.'

At this point, wouldn't my processor be the slowest link? Its FSB is 1066, but I know that's not what each core 'runs' at, right? But, I guess one thing at a time... I'm really considering purchasing the memory/video card/psu...My wife may have a word or two for you.

well not exactly ... the slowest thign now will really be your hard drive..and the best option for that upgrade would be a raptor which would be alot more money.

as far as dar as the CPU goes... an upgrade for that would be around 200-300 more

what id do for now is this:

do the new ram and video card psu etc and see how it runs.. if you still feel the need for more power... that mobo supports quad core processors

*snicker* I know! I'd just have to hide the shipping bill from my wife on that one!

I'm looking at the thermaltakes, what would you pick out of the ones newegg has to offer?

yep just be sure you have a sata cable , as OEM hard drives do not come with the cable!

you will have to copy all of the contents of the old drive into the new drive... then leave the old drive in a plugged in and then boot the pc and enter the bios and select the 150Gb western digital raptor to boot from... if everyhtign goes well it will boot perfectly ... if not put it back to normal and post back here

How do I go about copying the contents over? I'm really not to attatched to the info I have on this one, so a clean install won't kill me. I can just put all the info I want to keep on a DVD-R.

I guessing I should do the new HDD first (installing O/S if needed). Then either the PSU or RAM. Then the video card (Def PSU before vid card, of course )

On a side note, my wife isn't so upset about my $770. Must be the change in season
