Are you using 2 hard disks in your machine, or did you just create partitions?

Also, did you get Vista thru the Express Upgrade Program? If so, make sure you install the Vista version of Empowering Technology, on the drivers CD Acer give you, rather than your XP copy [although I find that all EP does is slow down your system for no real benefits]

Were these the express upgrade disk/s or the ones that came with your system?
Also, what model is it?

Sorry for yet another question, but did you load the Upgrade Kit disk first, then the Vista install disk, then the Upgrade Kit again, or manually by booting into the Vista disk?

Well, I suggest backing up and reinstalling by booting up from the CD-ROM - otherwise you may have trouble getting Vista to set up the MBR properly so that the two installations are separate. A fresh install is always the best thing to do when it comes to OS upgrades.

Also keep an eye on the hard disk activity light - if it's on all the time you might want to consider only using Vista when you need it.
I'm certain that all the extra HDD activity is what killed the drive as I have only had it around 8 months and my laptop isn't on 24/7 - which is why I sent my Aspire back to where I brought it from today.
