| hi everyone. i need some help. i just bought a new 500 gb hard drive to add to my desktop computer but after i put it in, it did not work. so i got my dads tools and took it a part to see if something was broke in it. it looked cool with all the shiney round things called "platters", but the finger prints are hard to get off. i lost a couple of the little scews, and just finished putting it back together the best i could. one side of the hard drive has no screws, so i just used my dads duct taped to hold it on. the box says "eide/ata" and i followed all the instructions from western digital. i don't know what to do and can not get it to work. it was real expensive, and i need some help please. thanks james |

I'm sorry, but there's nothing we can do to help you, By opening the product.. and of course not being "certified" in that field you voided the warrenty. Because you claim it was a "brand new" product you should have simply returned it to the Proper return wharehouse or store where you have purchased the product. For future reference: - NEVER open a HARDRIVE on your OWN!

| Sigh,.. For one, You have fingerprints on the Hard-drive which will not let the hard-drive work! For Two, Its now never going to work EVER AGAIN, due to the fact if you were to fix a hard-drive you would need to be in an air-tight room.. No dust etc, Howstuffworks "How Hard Disks Work"

| Your dad probably meant to open your computer NOT the hard drive. It won't work anymore because you took it apart and you got your fingerprints on the disks. Hard drive are not meant to be open at all. Your just going to have to face the fact that it is JUNK now and buy a new one.

| Hi James. Thanks for the post, and we're glad you got it running. To answer your question about why the drive doesn't work, and how come, I'll do my best. But first, remember to never open a hard drive case. I'll explain. You see the hard drive is a very special piece of equipment that must be handled with extreme care. You can never allow the air we breath to enter inside the hard drive because the inside of the hard drive must be kept sterile. The regular air that you and I breath is not sterile. That's why sometimes we get sick with a cold or the flu. Once air gets inside, it sort of acts like a poison to the hard drive platters and read/write heads. There are special rooms designed that are made 100% sterile, specifically for the purpose of working on a hard drive. These rooms are similar to a surgical Operating Room at the hospital. There are also special tools made to work on the hard drive and open them up, and they also must be sterile -- sort of like to tools you'll once again find in a surgical room at the hospital. Regular tools from the store or your Dad's garage are not sterile enought for this type of repair. It needs special tools. Lastly, because hard drives are very delicate pieces of equipment, they require special computer technicians who have the knowledge and skills to work on them. These special technicians with special training can be thought of as like the Doctors at the hospital. When someone gets sick (like your hard drive did), they need to go to the hospital where they can get proper care from Doctor's. The same is true for your hard drive -- it requires special care when it isn't working proper. If you ever buy something new, and it doesn't work, then return it to where you purchased it. They'll send it back to the manufacture to get repaired, and you'll get new one. Thanks again for your post, james, and I hope this helps to understand why the fingerprints are bad on a hard drive.
