| For the past 2 weeks I have been having trouble with my system re-booting randomly.. At first I thought it might be my new Vista install so I removed Vista and went back to Xp-Pro. It still does it. The next step I done was removed my 2gigs of ram and went back to the factory 1gig that came with the system. Still it re-boots at random.. I have checked the fans and they are working fine. In the bios I get the following rpms. CPU 2,500 rpms System fan 2,700 rpms The tempature of the CPU when I checked it was 34degrees celcius = 93.2 fahrenheit If I shut this computer down for the night when I try to restart it, it will do a continuous reboot then shut down. I then have to unplug the power for a few seconds before I can get it to try and boot again.. It also at this time has a very high pitch noise that sounds like it may be coming from the processor. I have unhooked all the fans and the noise is still there. But only during the boot up process. Once the computer boots, the noise will go away. What other steps can I do to try and pinpoint this issue? |

| Have you run a virus scan on your computer? If not run a virus scan to see if there is any viruses on it.

| Hi there RaceJunkie, Firstly, welcome to CompuForums. I hope that you can visit our forum often in the future and post - rather than just receiving our help and advice, and then disappearing. We provide our help for free, and all we ask in return is that you participate in our forum and refer your friends, or consider a premium membership. If your CPU sensor is reporting 2 degrees C, then there is definitely something wrong here. Download + install SpeedFan - just to check that it's the sensor that's giving such an incorrect value, rather than the software you are using: SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer

| One of the best online virus scanners I've used is Trend Micro's Housecall: Trend Micro - Free online virus Scan

| I'll check them out when I get home this evening. I did not notice that 2 degrees on the cpu when I posted this, or I would have double checked that one. You would think that the bios temp would be more accurate, no? I did remove my video card last night to see if that was the problem but after about 1 1/2 hrs, it rebooted again. |

| Hi. Did anybody else notice that those voltages reported are quite a bit off? Random restarts (due to hardware) are typically caused by two things--the RAM or the power supply. You tried the RAM, so it could be that your PSU is dying. The voltages for each of the 12v, 5v, and 3.3v lines should be very close to the numerical value of the line (no more or less than 0.5v). If the voltage isn't right, or fluctuates a lot, then you need a new PSU. Voltages should pretty much be constant in addition to being close to the value of the line. The thing that troubles me is that all of your voltages are low--which could be the problem, and the 12v line is all the way down to 10.5v! It's highly unlikely that this is due to a virus, but if you do want to scan for viruses, do so in Safe Mode. I'd put my money on the PSU, but hopefully it all works out okay.

| I ran a report on My work PC and got theses results. My home PC and work PC are made by the same company, with not much difference.. Quote:

| Yeah, the voltages on your work computer are much more reasonable. I'm not sure what you have as far as peripherals go (# of hard drives, optical drives, video card, etc), but you'll want to make sure to get a good PSU in addition to a PSU that has enough watts for your setup. Generally if it's a normal computer that you use for everyday stuff (and not a hardcore gamer with 2 video cards, or overclocking), you'll be fine with a 400 watt PSU. Antec TruePower are good, but they can be a bit pricey, and you're also paying for the name. However, they make good PSU's. I don't have any other brands off the top of my head because I've pretty much only used Antec. I really hope that it is the PSU, and that you're not buying a new PSU for no reason, but given the voltages that are reported, I'd put good money on that. Did you take voltage readings with a different program to make sure that it's not the program? Speedfan is not bad--just google it--it's free. Hope it all works out.

I bought a Dynex 350-Watt ATX CPU Power Supply Model: DX-PS350W found here |

| Hmm - can you describe what hardware [drives, video cards, etc.] and whether you have upgraded the system with any components since purchasing it?

| It's all factory except for the video card and a Dual layer dvd. I'll look at that when I get home.. I took out the video card to troubleshoot everything. |
| ||||
| Well - have a look at the wattage the video card uses. If it's over, say, 50 watts, then you may need a beefier PSU - many system manufactures use the cheapest PSU [lowest wattage] that will run their systems stably, and any upgrades / addons can overload the PSU.

| I think 350 watts is fine for your system with one HD, one optical drive, and a video card. It's probably more than enough. Hopefully it works...
