Firstly - don't go for Dell. Most people who buy Dell end up regretting it later.

HP is a solid brand - my first HP purchase had nothing wrong with it at all, apart from me accidently snapping the CD ROM tray off. That was completley my fault, and HP picked up the computer, replaced the drive, and returned it all for free within a week. It was still under warranty but most manufacuers don't cover accidental damage under the included warranty. That computer lasted for the ~6 years I used it, before I replaced it with my current HP desktop PC.

Based on what you are planning on using the computer for - this computer will be more than adequate for your needs:
Buy HP Pavilion Media Center a1710n PC(RK573AA#ABA), Ready-to-ship desktop PCs, Ready-to-ship desktop PCs, Desktop PCs, Rts desktops direct from the HP Home & Home Office Store

Also... why are you looking to replace the current one you are using? You could save money and upgrade it yourself, depending on the specs. [We do not know these as you skipped the step to fill them out when registering]

Don't go with dell, as everyone else has said your best best is HP, i used to have a HP computer when u stayed with my dad and i never had any problems with that, i now have a custom built pc, which didnt cost much either your look at about £600 - £700 depending on the specs i don't know what that is in $

With all the experience I have ever had, I never liked either... Then again i dont even like GATEWAY.. I would say look for who has the best Warrenty.. and warrenty upgrades..

I would even go to a local computer dealer and puchase one... typically most come with a year.

Dell's support has sort of died over the years while sending all the jobs to india.. Not to mention.. thats where every job / call goes anyway..

So in theory.. BUY LOCAL!

Hi ezd20 - if this is the first computer you will own then I recommend HP for easy set up. Their built in Help and Support is good too if you are a beginner. Think about what kind of internet connection you will use too. Make sure that what you purchase will be able to connect in the way you require. Sorry I can't give you specific models or prices as I am in New Zealand and it is a little different here!

I think Dell would work for her just fine. Dell IMO is the best one out there. I have had my Dell going on 2 years now without any problem. But it is up to her to deside.

Dell really is a hit-and-miss brand. Some people's machines actually last and they don't need to deal with support, while other machines get issues [some are actually shipped dead] and then people need to deal with Dell's outsourced support. Personally, I refuse to buy Dell products, simply on the grounds of poor quality and service. If they had a better reputation, then I would suggest a Dell machine.

Well there are a lot of other brands that are hit-and-misses also like Hewlett Packard for one and Packard Bell for another. Personally I never dealt with Dell a friend of mine has and he told me they suck.

Well Dell is also a great family computer also IMO. I have had a HP computer and all I ever had was trouble with it.

I do admit all my starter computers were HP's and compaq's .. therefore i will stand there with Travicles. Every client that has ever sent me a dell, I call their tech support and get some results but after changing call centers perhaps 5 times per a call.. just to get an american.. I do admit all companies are moving to india or other countrys for the outsourcing of the support.. Best bet might just go to a walmart or best buy for an Emachines.. I have had no problem with them.. they are cheap and decent in everything.. Thing is.. pickup your own copy of windows and install over the crap they give you.
