| As long as you didn't choose the "reformat partition" option, your data is there. Desktop icons are part of your settings, which are reset to windows defaults (but you can replace all of them if you want--just right click on an application you want to be on the deskto and then choose "send to desktop"). All your data should be on the hard drive as long as you didn't reformat it. ________________________ This user added the following: ________________________ A lot of the built in hardware may require drivers to be installed from the manufacturer, like I said before. You will have to download these and install them manually, generally you can do so through the website of the manufacturer of the notebook. What brand is it?

| We'll need to know more than " i t does have a internal wireless less connection thing". What is the manufacturer and model of the laptop?

| Did you check the Gateway website? Here it is for your specific notebook: Gateway Support - 1008822 Gateway MX6436 Notebook Just click on "Driver Downloads" and it will bring up a list of all the drivers for all the hardware on the motherboard--I have a Gateway notebook of almost the same design, and it all works just fine. I'd install all the drivers they have on the website--pretty much all of it is necessary. I'd just install one, and if it doesn't work properly, install the other one--it shouldn't be that big of a deal.

| I'd use a flashdrive. Failing that, I'd use a network patch cable and connect directly to the router or modem.

| Okay, please tell us exactly what you want to do, and what is/isn't working. Is your ethernet adapter working? Because you don't NEED wireless to go online--I've found it much easier to get the ethernet working, go online, download all the drivers and install them. Please be specific in what isn't working at this point because I'm not very clear anymore. ________________________ This user added the following: ________________________ Well, looks like Ash beat me to it--guess we were typing at the same time.

| Okay, thanks for clarifying the problem--I thought you had installed some drivers already and it still wasn't working. So I would do what Ash recommended--if you have a flash drive, use a different computer and download all of the available drivers onto the flash drive and install them onto your laptop from there--from what I remember, all of Gateway's notebook drivers are in self-extracting zip files that will instruct you with anything you need to do for correct installation of the drivers--but make sure to read any dialog box that pops up because some driver installations require you to open a file and click on an exe file to initiate installation after extraction--and others are automatic. Give that a try--it's worked for me in the past--and let us know if you run into any problems. Good luck. Hope it works.

| You'll probably have to download and install more than just one driver. The Motherboard Driver is the one that installs the correct drivers for your CPU, Southbridge/Northbridge, and other things that are required for the motherboard to work properly with your CPU. The Motherboard Driver does not include such things as integrated devices like wireless, LAN, USB 2.0, card readers, display adapters, etc. These need to be downloaded and installed as well. Like I said in one of my previous posts, you should download and install all of the drivers that are listed for your laptop.
