| I need some advice on express media player buttons. I have a Toshiba Satellite M45-S331. When I purchased it the 6 buttons to the left of my keyboard worked fine. I recently took it in for what I thought would be a minor repair. It turned out they had to wipe everything clean and I had to start from scratch. Now my buttons don't work. They told me that I could get online and download software from Toshiba. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Toshiba Controls and Utilities. That didn't fix it. Can anyone help? mbjones |

| Hi mbjones, welcome to CompuForums. I hope that you can post here often and also it would be great if you could add yourself to our member map [see link above]. Have you tried this utility?: http://www.opendrivers.com/downloado...php?href=42251 If this still doesn't work please get back to us and I will try and find another driver.

| Hi, thanks for your help on this, I really need these buttons for my job. I hadn't tried the Hotkey Utility until today. It didn't fix my problem. I know you have to have Express Media Player for the buttons to work, but I would think that if it worked before I should still have the program. I could be wrong. mbjones |

| Hi there mbjones, If the computer repair centre wiped your hard disk clean [and they should have given you a backup] it's likely that they installed a generic [and possibly illegal] copy of XP unless you provided them with your recovery disks. If you know that these buttons do not work with any software apart from the Express Media Player then that would be the issue. If they do, then maybe the Express Media Player comes bundled with the driver for these buttons. Also, if your laptop came with a CD marked with "Drivers", or "Application Software" or a similar phrase, you may be able to find the Express media buttons driver [a driver is some software that helps your computer to run hardware] on that.

| Hey Thanks! I had given the repair guy my drivers cd, but it doesn't mean that he used them. I tried reinstalling Toshiba controls and I also installed Toshiba common modules. One of those fixed it. I figured probably common modules since I had already tried the controls. I had been trying to figure this out for 2 months and it was something that simple? I don't know why I didn't think to try the cd. Thanks again! mbjones |

| No problem, we're here to help. I hope that you can stop by at our little community here every now and again. Sometimes, instructions from your media buttons are sent via the same connectors that connect your main keyboard to the rest of your laptop. Windows has the built-in drivers for a standard keyboard, but not for the special buttons - it just ignores the instructions it doesn't understand. So by installing Toshiba's own keyboard drivers, Windows then knows that the instruction sent to it when you press a media button is and then it acts on it. Again, glad I could help you. Sometimes the simplest answer is the one that works

| Hi. If you have the time, I'd just recommend taking the laptop back to the repair place and complain that after you brought it in and they worked on it, the controls are not working, while they were working before. Unless a repair place states something like you'll get the computer back in a certain state, it's understood that you'll get it back in the functioning same state as when you brought it in, and therefore, they must fix it (espeically when you've probably already spent a lot of time trying to fix it). Hopefully the latest suggestion about the driver/utility disk helps (it does with mine), and you won't have to take it in again, which is already aggravating in itself. But if you paid for service, they cannot return you a partially-functioning laptop. My sister has a Toshiba notebook and took it in for repair and something very similar to this happened, and the repair place took it back and fixed it at no charge. |

| I agree with guyladouche - the computer shop should have informed you if they were going to wipe it clean, and at least told you that you would need to install the drivers, and really they should have done it for you. This is one of the reasons that I don't trust repair shops [except from making warranty claims, in that case I'll backup and reformat anyway and remove my hard drive lock]

| When I originally brought it in I had 2 complaints one being the buttons, which I was able to fix with the drivers. The other being that my power button isn't right. Some little piece broke off that holds it up. Of course that wasn't their fault either (yeah right). They said that if I wanted it fixed that I would have to replace the top to my keyboard. I think you're right though I'm going to take it in again and tell them they broke so "Could you please fix it?" Maybe it'll work. Thanks, mbjones |
