Question Fingerprint Reader

I am thinking about adding a fingerprint reader to a laptop config., my question is what if I lose that finger, can you store someone elses fingerprint in the computer as a backup finger. I know it sounds funny but hey gotta have backups of everything now days, I don't want one, if my 1 finger is the only way of starting the machine.

Thanks,
Cruiserx

make a gel back-up. Get high quality Plaster-of-pairs (I think thats what its called) and push your finger in it and wait until it dries, then pour some kind of memory gel into it and freeze it.

but can you not use a different finger if you have just one cut off?

most fingerprint softwares allow for you to save multiple fingers. Also, read my last sentence.
On my wife's laptop, I registered all 10 of mine.

It's not a lot of hassle, it's GREAT. signing in is quick and easy You still have to have a password for backup.

My son has a fingerprint reader on his laptop but he also has a password he can type in if he gets a cut or something that distorts his print.

Please explain, why would you want one??, if a family member or a friend is using your laptop without your permission it's a lot lot easier & cheaper to use a password consisting in part of numerals, almost impossible to break!!

I've been thinking of getting one of these too.
and the reason for me getting one is because I always leave my laptop hanging around the place, and everyone tried to get on iit. By having a finger print thing, no one is going to nbother and try it, as they know it wont work
- Plus they look cool

The longer the password, the better. Password crackers are common, and work rather quickly. What slows them down is the length. I agree that you should combine even all 4 of the character types (uppercase, lowercase, numbers and special characters).

What can work great is to create a sentence like:
iLuvemyd0gS@m. Basically, I love my dog Sam. By replacing some letters with special characters and numbers you slow down people. by placing the period at the end (yes use the period) you really throw off people. Still, all this does is slow the password cracker, it will eventually find it, it's a matter of math.

Hmmm, my reply wasn't very clear was it?, I just meant was that although looking cool was good, being secure was the prime object whatever system was used whether it be a password or a fingerprint reader, sorry for the confusion!

The probability of you losing your finger completely, like with absolutly no recoverable tissue matter is so small it probably won't even happen. I know 3 or 4 people who have lost their fingers and have had them sewn back on.

Umm.. my brother lost one of his, and it wasn't sewn back on. Still, like I said, 1) you must have a password backup, and 2) you normally can register more than just 1 finger.

I had a finger print reader back along. It was ok until somebody cut off my finger and then it became a bit of a secu.....

ok, unlikely story. But yes, I use biometrics here, its an interesting way of doing things because it's alot quicker. HOWEVER, the software that enters your passwords for you when you get a finger match must know your password, so how is that password stored? OK, so we might encrypt it, but then its rendered useless. (MD5 etc is one way encryption only etc... Would need brute force to crack) and you cant bruteforce everytime you swipe your finger. So maybe its security could be more flawed and maybe its less secure. Because who knows how it stores your credentials, plain text maybe???
