Try unplugging the Monitor cord and just have the VGA cord plugged in and restart.

I used to run a S-cable to my TV for movies and such and I'd have to shutdown, unplug the monitor cord, plug the S-cable in and turn it back on. It always worked for me.

Are you using one of those computers with the monitor and tower built together? I'm sorry, I have absolutely no experience on those machines...Maybe just restarting would work...

right lads, seems my graphics card is not strong enough to run two screens of high resolution at a time/or the spare monitor port, vga, is not working, as i have swapped the cables around, and large screen is perfect but 17in is off.. as i don't want to buy a new graphics card just for this, i am getting a vga splitter.. thanks guys..
