Default Western Digital External Hard Drive

Okay, my HD just got messed up, not sure how it happend, but it got messed up, everytime I boot it up I hear a clicking sound and my computer does not pick it up.

Anyone know how to fix this without me getting a new one? I have SOOOOO much stuff backed up here form music to art stuff for the website to my school homework, and I really need it today to get some work out that I need to finish.

The drive is almost 11 months old.

I don't expect you will get much data off of it tonight. In fact, it may not be recommended to do too many attempts at booting. I'll try to find an article I read recently about recovering data and post a link then.

Till then:

Start by freezing your hard drive overnight. (wrap it in paper towel in a plastic baggy to keep too much moisture away from it while it freezes). It sounds wonky, but it works more often than not.(from what I remember that article stating)
Then tomorrow re-install it. See if it works. If it does, BACK EVERYTHING UP!!! Call for warranty service first.

Sometimes you just get a bad part (yes even new parts). That is why there is a warranty. But call for the warranty service first. That way you can have a new one on the way while you try to back up your data.

Or, you can send your HDD off and spend a few hundred dollars to have the data recovered.

HDD's current technology don't do well with movement.. so dropping, or sudden jarring motions (especially while in use and not locked) are the major factor in many HDD failures (especially in laptops).

Freeze your hard drive to recover data: Myth or reality? - [Geeks are Sexy] technology news is a blog entry about similar situations... Freeze your hard drive, myth or fact basically. Still.

Additional forum posts usually bear the freezing out. not 100%, but it's better than a stick in your eye.

Well there are some cases where freezing can't do anything. For example, one of my dad's drives failed. I took it apart to reveal major head crashing on both platters. But it's always worth a shot.

I tried pulling apart a owned harddrive one time (the motor part burnt out) to see if I could swap disks - yeah, it's not just screwed in there - it's mega attached - good luck there man, sorry .

Well iono about your external, but most externals (I think all externals I've seen) are just a case w/ a fan and an internal hard drive in there with a SATA to USB converter...

I'm running a Buffalo set of dual 425's and I'm loving it (though it's full...)

I actually had good luck with getting the disks out of my dads drive.

Well . . . I got good news and bad news.

The good news is that I got it in the fridge and got it froze it until it was as cold as a brick.

The bad news is that it still didn't work, I got installed, but it didn't show up.

anyone got any other suggestions? I really don't wanna lose my school work and my photoshop items

ALSO, if I open it up and am able to take the disk out, what can I do with it? Can I put it in my computer and the files come up?

I wouldn't recommend taking out the disks because hard drives are VERY sensitive. Opening one is bad. You could send the drive to one of those data recovery specialists. On a side note, what do you mean by cold as a brick? I didn't know bricks were cold.

That was supposed to be an expersion, but guess it didn't work out good.
I really don't want to send it to another place that'll charge money. I'll call us WD and see what they say. . .

That would be your best course of action. If the HDD is less than a year old, they might warranty it and recover the data at no charge. Let us know how it goes.
