Angry Monitor keeps restarting itself HELP!

Im not very tech smart so excuse my lack of the lingo.. I got a acer LCD 17" monitor with my computer when i bought it in summer 2005, about a week after my warranty stopped it desided it liked to turn itself on and off whenever it felt like it, Ive hooked up a different monitor (an old clunker one) and it worked fine, but I dont have the space for it - so I was wondering does anyone know what is wrong with my monitor or how to fix it?

Current Monitor/Settings:
Acer 17" AL1715
1024 X 768 pixel, 32 Bit.

My Computer Details:
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition SP2
Manufacturer + Model: HP Pavillion
RAM/System Memory:896 MB Ram (also said 1 GB)??
Hard Drive:????
CPU/Processor:AMD Athlon 3500+
Graphics/Video:ATI RADEON Xpress 200 Series
Other Drives:HP DVD Writer 640c
IDE-DVD DROM6216

? I dunno if that helps.. Im so frustrated someone guide me!!

Hi there lickitysplit,
Firstly welcome to CompuForums, I hope that you can stick around and post here rather than vanish, never to return once we've given you our advice which is a really unfair thing to do.

I hate to say this, but it's very likely that your monitor is failing. I had an old, old CRT [from Y2K] fail a few years ago in a similar way. Eventually it wouldn't even start the tube, just keep clicking at me. This is probably due to a failing power supply in the monitor. Do you plug a mains lead straight into the monitor, or is there a power brick between the mains outlet and the monitor's power input?

Also, if the monitor is right next to a wall or in a corner, try moving it. Heat can sometimes cause the problem, but keeping it cool will probably only stop the problem from getting worse.
Be prepared to have to buy a new one.

hey, thanks for the reply. Im not sure what a "mains lead" is, but my monitor is plugged into a power bar..? its a direct plug in, there isnt a block. my monitor is over heating though i think, because i noticed lastnight it gets really hot then starts turning itself on and off, when its cool it works fine (like right now). its away from a wall by about a foot, but its infront of a window, (in the shade) my towers fan blows air towards it.. I dont know if that would be enough to heat it though.. is it possible that a different power cord would help? and I also was using a crt that was super old - but it worked fine - I just cant see very well on it, and like i said before - no room for those old clunkers.

And, if I have to buy a new one - what is a good reliable name to purchase? I was hoping to spend 300 or less..

I think a power bar might be an extension cord?
