Default Faulty SKY PLUS Hard drive(MAXTOR)

Is it possible to change a MAXTOR 3.5 series, Fireball Quickview 40GB hard drive in my SKY plus box. If so, how? I don't really want to pay SKY for an engineer to fix it and only get a 2 month waranty on it.
Thanks

Hi Darren,

Welcome to CompuForums! Thanks for becoming a valued member of our community. We're here to help you for free, so I hope that you can help us by exploring the rest of the forum, posting in some of the other threads and adding yourself to our member map.

Replacing the hard drive inside a Sky+ box is fairly easy, but we'll need a few more details so we can explain the procedure and find a cheap, good-quality compatible hard drive to use, as the boxes differ. Also it would be handy to know what version of the Sky EPG your box has.

Thanks for the reply.
I have a Pace box approx. 2 years old. The information from the stcky label under the box is Pace model No. BSKYB 3100, Part Code 540-2309510.
The information available from the TV screen via the Sky plus setup section is PACE model No. 4.008p, version 9F2105, serial No. 0070900281, operating system 1.31B00).
The EPG software version is 'sky+4.10.c' (does that stand for electronic programme guide?)
Other info on the hard drive sticker is Maxtor model No. 2f040L07106P1, dated 18/03/04, ATA/133 HDD, LBA 80293248ABA, Code VAM51JJ0, +12V 601mA, +5V 559mA.
Hope this is helpfull as I'm not the best with computers etc.
Thanks and fingers crossed Darren
P.S if it is possible, could a hard drive with a larger memory be fitted as my missus uses most of it up her stuff?

Cheers

Well your box should be upgradable.

Personally, I suggest buying an Upgrade Kit from this site:
Sky+, Humax, DigiFusion & TiVo hard disk drive upgrade & replacement kits : XtendedPlay UK : The PVR Upgrade Specialists

It may be a bit more expensive than simply purchasing a hard drive and doing it yourself, but you will need to find a compatible hard drive - I couldn't. At least you know the drive will be compatible, and the drives they sell are designed for use in consumer electronics, hence it will be a lot quieter than a standard PC one. Plus they include all the screwdrivers you'll need, and some printed instructions to keep handy while you perform the upgrade - and you'll be able to record many more shows since they supply larger hard drives.
