I LEGALLY downloaded a movie from the bigpond site (australian ISP) and payed and everything.
Basically they give me 7 days to watch a movie and then i cant watch it anymore and i can only watch it on my XP partition which is really inconvenient as i try only to use it for recording so i really need all the space i have on there.
I want to know if its possible to remove the lock they put on this movie, I've tried some stupid DRMremover and it sucked, it didn't do anything. I play it in VLC player and it opens but its all funky coloured and i cant see anything. just weird shapes of different colour.
This is not urgent but it would be awesome/convenient if anyone knew how to get rid of this lock thing....maybe even along with the 7 day limit.

Legally paid for? It sounds like a rental and you want to break the lock to keep it forever. It sounds illegal to me and I don't think anyone here would help you.

it is indeed a rental but im looking more at getting it to play on my linux computer as opposed to my XP because as of today my computer wont boot into XP therefore i have a movie i cant watch. I dont really mind not being able to watch it after 7 days i just dont want to watch it on my XP install

Probably faster and better to fix XP than doing something illegal. What's the problem with XP?

i was lazy and decided i would delete stuff off the XP installation through linux as opposed to rebooting into XP and safely uninstalling and im pretty sure i deleted something of value during the deleting process.
It was one of those weird '09099fh2njfksr2u39rn2u3d982u' like folders. Im not to good with XP but im pretty sure that was necessary to run the computer.

Can you boot into safe mode and use system restore? You can try booting with the XP CD and use the repair console. One of the two methods also has restore to last known good configuration.

when i go to boot into XP it just restarts instantly. No chance to go into safe mode or restore to last known configuration so i will just re-install windows but keep all the files. that should be alright. Im just scared that if i reinstall WMP all the liscences will be gone but eh ive watched the movie and enjoyed it so yeah. ill get around to doing that some other time.

thats like saying in the US taking blockbuster movies and copying them is okay

Some movies / music that you download, you cannot share it with other users (or computers) - as it then makes it very easy for you to re-distribute it.

If you have all the correct codecs installed on Linux, and it still won't play (even under VLC) then your best option would be to download it again.

Heres the uber lame thing. I'm very willing to pay again and download once again but the media center rubbish is not supported on Ubuntu or any linux dist or even any mac....or even anything older then SP2 with a .NET framework of 3.0 or later. I tried to wine it but that got me no where. Lame... oh well, ill just buy it from ebay =)
