| Hello I am new to your forum and am going to dive in head first. I have recently reinstalled Windows XP on my Dell Inspiron 1000 notebook, and now I can't view dvds in Windows Media Player. It is giving some message about missing codec. I think it is some kind of driver that is missing but I can't seem to find it online or in my driver disc that came with the computer. I also just purchased a sony camcorder for home movies, but cant us software to do any editing or viewing once downloaded to this computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

| Went through last night and repaired windows and got the editing software for sony handycam to work but I am still having problems with WMP playing a dvd when inserted. I did try to go to microsoft and look for the codec driver but not much luck there. |

| Do you know the model name of the CD drive in your laptop? Also it would be a good idea for you to be posting in threads other than your own.

| You might want to call Dell about it - if you get through to a forigen call centre, just insist on being put through to your country. The reason is that due to various copyright laws etc. DVD codecs are not just handed out liberally, which is why I haven't found a suitable one despite hunting for quite a while. Someone there should point you in the right direction, and email you a link to where you can download the right codec for your laptop. You may want to see if you already have any DVD player software installed on your PC [i.e WinDVD, as this is usually where the codec is found].

| You can go here for a basic idea: Find A Codec For Windows Media Player 10 - HERE! If its a DivX or XVID problem, go here: DivX - Get the divx codec for windows media player - HERE! XVID - Find an xvid windows media player codec - HERE! Hope this helps. |

| This is a rather extensive problem, it seems. I was going to suggest looking for the latest codecs..not just at wmp but rather using a search engine to find it. but ash has it right, i think you are better served getting tech support with this. will save time. |

| You might want to see if the following app lets you play DVDs: Downloads - AVS DVD Player 2.4.1.121 Freeware Software Note, I have not tried it myself, so the usual advice regarding internet downloads applies.
