For those of you that run a forum, here are some things you should know about what mods should/shouldn't do.
1. ---Private Message---
What's your password?
A good moderator would never ask for a password

2. "Hm... I'm bored... I'll ban these guys"
Members shouldn't be banned unless totally necessary

3."h3110. 1 @m 73h r0xx0rz!"
Moderators should use proper English (It doesn't have to be perfect spelling or anything, just proper grammar)

4."Ha ha! You're a n00b, you don't know how!"
Moderators should help unexperienced and/or new members, not make fun of them.

5. "***** **** ***** **** *****"
Moderators should not constantly swear.

6. "Do it or your Internet will be shut off"
Good moderators do not threaten users, unless it's something silly like "View my thread or I'll destroy you!" or if it's 100% necessary and the user has been extremely abusive.

7. "Ooh! Look at these controls! "Beep! Boop! BOOM! YAY!"
Good moderators don't get pleasure out of destroying the forum they run. They use their moderating powers for good, not evil.

8."I just made a new hacking software. I'll put it in the graphics section!"
There are two things wrong with this. Good moderators put things in the right section, and do not post warez.

9. "A helpful thread! Locked! Spam! Stickied!
This is all backwards. Helpful threads should be stickied and not locked, so people can see them and post comments. Spam should be locked (AND deleted) so the problem won't come out of hand and so only one person will receive an infraction.

Thanks for that dimitri. I currently have someone designing and working on a forum for me, and eventually when he completes it this will be useful to me to post for new moderators to read. The moderators on CompuForums are absoloutley A1 5STAR, i cant fault them in anyway. I wish this could be said of other forums that I have belonged to. Some people see it meerley as a power trip and to belittle new users or people with less knowlege than them

wow... i have to agree with every SINGLE thing that was said. its really a shame that when you go on a forums that is really awesome and you really like it there, and when you ask a question, the moderators or admins are pricks and too high up on thier horse to answer questions, or just insult you. If you care to see an example of a site that is really nice but the operators are really really a bunch of assfaces, then go here and ask a question to them lol h4ck-y0u.org :: Index this site is a perfect example of what not to do on a forums. Except for Beavis, and .GM they are the only 2 good operators on the site that are actually helpful. nice share dimitri h4ck-y0u is exactly what justingh said "powertrip" the only people that show half way decent freindly support to new users, are the users.

I've seen hosting companies that had a mod that drives people away pretty good, I know what it's like without examples. I just give a comment, and he starts swearing like there's no tomorrow.

yes, ive seen it alot also. people think that they have some sort of extreme power over the people on the site. really the admin and moderators meanings are to support and make the experience of the users, one of a kind. not to drive them away, as you said.

Heh, well one of my mods swears a bit, and doesn't always use proper English.

Aside from that, he is good, and my other mods are excellent.

It's okay if they swear a little (If it's okay with admins) and it doesn't have to be perfect grammar. I don't think I've known someone to have 100% proper grammar.

well i for certain dont lol. i really do try and keep it proffesional though. i want to make the most sense so they know what to do and what not to do and so they can understand things w/o continuously coming back becuase the first time they couldnt understand it.

Techspot is like that both the A.O., & mods are pompous prats, I was a member there for three weeks & didn't put a foot wrong, nor did I break a rule, of which there many, it should be renamed Stalag* Techspot [*short for "stammlager, concentration camp] I tried to log on & got a notice "Permanently Banned", no reason was given.

Surely it's a matter of common sense, I was a mod for some considerable time on another forum, but personal commitments meant I had to leave, I was a very experienced mod & had made over 10,000 posts, I found myself reporting fellow mods to the AO, as he only he could ban them, they didn't have a clue, the day after they got the job, some were banning members left right & centre, the AO demoted three down to member on my recommendation, I didn't enjoy doing it, but the forum's reputation was going down the pan fast, & I mean fast!!

yep, there are many sites with staff like that and they deserver nothing less than to be shutdown for good. Alot of sites though with bad staff like that usually are all in it together and they all usually are aware of eachothers actions. Its a shame that it has to happen to some of the best sites on the net. Very dissapoitning it is

Almost all moderators on all forums can move discussions to different sections of the forum, close discussions, edit the content of individual postings, answer questions (or help people with problems), and stick discussions so they remain visible in their forum section even if no new postings are made to them. I agree that a moderators or even a members language should be kept in ckeck at all times. My main concern is that often there are very young individuals that visit or are members of different forums. Due to this, I believe that adults should set examples. They may hear certain things elsewhere but, not where adults are utilizing bad language or terrible grammar to get their point across. Which then brings us to a whole new world..............text messaging. Since this has become the way to communicate it has created a whole other language. Some forget or never learn correct grammar due to this. I am not saying that this is the main problem but, it is part of the problem. Remember, when most students are quizzed about simple geography they often do not know the state or country right next to them. So how do we expect them to spell it, let alone place it in a complete sentence.

Grappler, could you explain this post? I did not detect anything in ghosts post to suggest he is implying anything to do with any moderators on this forum or the forum itself? I'm just curious as to what you are getting at
