Did the laptop come shipped with Vista? Your drive might be in "Native SATA Mode", which is sometimes adjustable in the BIOS - it needs to be off.
What make and model is the laptop? If you have only had it for 7 months you should be able to get it repaired under warranty if the hardware is failing.
