Default DVD burner playback problems

I own a LightScribe DVD player/recorder and have had it for about a year. I've hade no problems with it untill last night. I hardly ever use the player unless installing my OS again. My quick spec are as follows:

AMD 4800+, Biostar TF7050, 2 gigs mem, 8600gt 256mb, WD 120gigs
Lite-On DVDRW LH-20A 1L SATA, Vista Ultimate, Bitdefender Internet Security.

All updates are installed including drivers.

Now to my problem. Last night I wanted to watch Starwars III on my computer. Everything was going fine for about 10min. Then the screen froze. When this happened i looked over at my HD light and noticed it was solidly lit, meaning my HD was running hard. I took the DVD out and it was just warm, not HOT. So I ruled out over heating.

I thought it might just be the DVD, so I tried severel others and the same thing happened, but in less then 10 min, more like 2 min.

I'm wondering why my HD was running so hard when I have 2 gigs of ram? Are there settings that I need to adjust? Also, after taking the DVD out, my HD runs and runs and run...for about 2 min afterwards.

So, could it be hardware or software?

Any help would be great, because I don't want to through a DVD player out when it works.
