I've never tried a whole band, as I play gee-tar by myself, but I use acoustica mixcraft. It's free, simple as anything, and you can do several tracks, with built-in effects for guitarists, or any track you play. for something like drums, it may not be easy, but pretty much anyone else could do their part on acoustica, then have the drummer get a simple mixing program for the compy.
