If you always go to trusted, legitamate sites (i.e. walmart.com, charter.net) you can go on forever without ever encountering a virus.

It's when you go "surfing" to random unkown sites that you run into problems with virus infested sites, phishing copycat sites, spyware, malware, trojans...

A lot of it depends on where you go on the internet.
