Well, ive had many of the same problems with phpbb3 mods and really when you go to thier site, no one ever just answers the freakin questions...they just load you w/ a bunch of garbage and then they tell you to go to the IRC but when you get to the IRC they tell you to take your problems to their Board : p ofcourse! Try using vB. They have over 100 pages of great mods that are as easy as installing a couple of files into your forum. Also the templates that need to be edited with the select mods are all in the ACP so its real east access.
